WhatIsWiki (“we,” “us”) operates this website at https://www.whatiswiki.com. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.

Information we collect

Newsletter signup: If you subscribe, we collect your email address (and an optional signup source label) solely to send article updates and manage the list. We store this in our own database. We do not sell or rent this information to third parties.
Helpful feedback: If you use the “Was this helpful?” control on an article, we store your yes/no response tied to the article and a random visitor key. That key is stored in an HTTP-only cookie named wiw_vid so we can avoid counting the same visitor twice.
Theme preference: Light/dark mode is saved in your browser’s localStorage (wiw_theme). This stays on your device and is not sent to our servers as personal profile data.
Hosting & security logs: Our hosting provider may process technical logs (such as IP address, user agent, and request metadata) to operate, secure, and debug the service.
Product analytics (Microsoft Clarity): We use Microsoft Clarity to understand how people use the site (session recordings, heatmaps, and basic usage metrics). Clarity may collect device/browser information, pages viewed, clicks, scrolls, and similar interaction data. Clarity masks sensitive input fields by default. See Microsoft Clarity Privacy.

Cookies & similar storage

wiw_vid — anonymous visitor key for helpful-feedback rate limiting (HTTP-only cookie, up to ~1 year).
wiw_theme — theme preference in localStorage (not a cookie).
Microsoft Clarity may set its own cookies / local storage for analytics and session replay (not advertising cookies from ad networks).

How we use information

To send newsletter updates, if you’ve subscribed
To understand which explainers readers find helpful and improve the site
To operate, secure, and maintain the website

We do not use your data to build advertising profiles, and we do not sell personal data.

Third parties

Depending on how the site is hosted and delivered, infrastructure providers (for example hosting, DNS, or CDN services) may process technical request data under their own terms. Newsletter addresses are stored in our application database. We use Microsoft Clarity for on-site analytics and session insights under Microsoft’s terms (Clarity Privacy). If we add a dedicated email provider later, we will name it here.

Your rights

Unsubscribe from the newsletter anytime by contacting us with the email you used to subscribe (we will add a one-click unsubscribe link in outbound mail when/if we send campaigns from an email provider).
Request deletion or access to your newsletter data by emailing whimsaas@gmail.com.
If you’re in the EU/UK, rights under GDPR (including access, correction, and deletion) may apply.
If you’re in India, applicable rights under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 may apply.

Data retention

Newsletter emails are kept until you ask us to remove them or we shut down the list. Helpful-feedback records are retained to measure article quality over time. The visitor cookie expires after about one year unless renewed by further feedback use.

We’ll update the “Last updated” date above whenever this policy changes, and note material changes here when needed.
