Introduction

CJP stands for Cockroach Janta Party, a satirical Indian protest movement founded on May 16, 2026 by Abhijeet Dipke. It started as a joke response to a Supreme Court remark comparing unemployed youth to “cockroaches,” gained more Instagram followers than India’s ruling party within a week, and led a two-month protest campaign that forced Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to resign on July 25, 2026.

It is not a registered political party. India’s Election Commission has no record of it, and it currently operates as a youth pressure movement rather than an electoral one.

That’s the short version. Here’s everything else.

How it started

On May 15, 2026, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant made a remark during a Supreme Court hearing about fraudulent professional credentials. He described some unemployed youth who turn to media and activism as behaving like “cockroaches” and “parasites of society.” The comment was aimed at a narrow group, but it was widely reported as a broader insult to India’s unemployed young people, and it went viral within hours.

The next day, Abhijeet Dipke posted on X announcing a “platform for all the cockroaches out there.” At the time he was a 30-year-old political communications strategist who had previously volunteered for the Aam Aadmi Party and was studying public relations at Boston University. The eligibility criteria he listed, half joking, were simple: unemployed, lazy, chronically online, and able to rant professionally. That post was the founding of CJP.

The name is a deliberate parody of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). “Janta” means “people’s,” so Cockroach Janta Party mirrors Bharatiya Janata Party almost exactly. The rallying slogan that came out of it, “Main Bhi Cockroach” (“I am also a cockroach”), turned the insult into a badge instead of a wound.

How fast it grew

CJP’s growth is the part that actually alarmed India’s political establishment. By most tracked accounts, the CJP Instagram account crossed 3 million followers within 78 hours of launch. It passed 10 million followers within five days, overtaking the official Instagram accounts of India’s major political parties in the process. Within a week it had more than 20 million followers and over 350,000 sign-ups on its own site. By the following Thursday, X blocked the CJP account in India, which was one of the clearest signs the government had stopped treating it as a meme and started treating it as a problem.

Who is Abhijeet Dipke

Dipke is from Pune. He studied journalism there before moving to the US for a master’s in public relations at Boston University, then returned to India in 2023. Between 2020 and 2023 he worked as a volunteer for the Aam Aadmi Party before starting CJP. He has since become the public face of the movement, leading rallies at Jantar Mantar, negotiating with government ministers, and delivering the “We have done it” speech when Pradhan’s resignation was announced.

What CJP actually wants: the manifesto

Within three days of launch, CJP had a website, a party anthem, and a five-point manifesto covering:

  1. Judicial independence. No post-retirement political appointments, such as Rajya Sabha seats, for judges.
  2. Electoral integrity. Criminal liability for officials found responsible for deleting legitimate votes.
  3. Gender representation. 50% reservation for women in Parliament and Cabinet.
  4. Media reform. Stricter accountability for broadcast monopolies.
  5. Anti-defection. Long election bans for politicians who switch parties mid-term.

That manifesto was the original, broader satire. The protests that actually forced a resignation were about something narrower and more urgent.

The exam scandal that turned it into a street movement

In May 2026, leaks disrupted the NEET UG exam, the entrance test for roughly two million students competing for medical school seats in India, forcing a mass re-exam. Anger over how the leak was handled, combined with separate irregularities in CBSE on-screen marking, is what pulled CJP off the internet and onto the street. Some families linked student suicides to the fallout from the leak, and compensation for those families became one of CJP’s central demands alongside Pradhan’s resignation.

Timeline of the protests

June 6, 2026. Demonstrations begin at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi, joined by student groups including the All India Students Federation and Students’ Federation of India.

Late June. Climate activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk joins in solidarity and begins an indefinite hunger strike at the protest site.

July 16, 2026. Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal joins the Jantar Mantar protest, calling for Wangchuk to be made education minister.

July 20, 2026. CJP’s “Chalo Sansad” march toward Parliament, timed to the opening of Parliament’s Monsoon Session, draws over 10,000 people and turns violent. Delhi Police report roughly 180 people injured — 60 protesters and 118 security personnel — along with 70 protesters detained. Police use tear gas and batons on the crowd. Video evidence of police striking protesters circulated widely; no footage emerged of protester-initiated violence.

July 21, 2026. Dipke announces CJP will stop street marches, citing protester safety, but says the sit-in and the demand for Pradhan’s resignation continue.

July 24, 2026. Wangchuk ends his hunger strike after 26 days. Hours later, CJP leaders meet with two senior government ministers for direct talks.

July 25, 2026. Dharmendra Pradhan announces his resignation on X. CJP calls off the agitation “in good faith.”

What the government did in response

Beyond the July 20 police response, the government blocked CJP’s X account within the first two weeks and, according to CJP, kept up pressure on the movement’s digital presence afterward. Protests and arrests connected to the movement also spread beyond Delhi. Authorities in Assam arrested six people, most of them Muslim, for attempting a solidarity demonstration, and police in Bihar opened fire on protesters, injuring three.

Is CJP a real political party?

No, not in the legal sense. It is not registered with the Election Commission of India and cannot field candidates in elections under that name. Political analysts describe it as a pressure group: an organized, high-visibility movement that influences policy and personnel decisions through public mobilization rather than electoral competition.

Whether that changes is genuinely unresolved. CJP spokesperson Vaishnavi Gaur told Al Jazeera on July 26 that converting CJP into a formal political party is a big decision the group wants to approach slowly, and that the movement, barely two months old at that point, hasn’t had time to build a full policy agenda beyond education. She said CJP intends to broaden its focus and start holding town-hall-style meetings with the public. Political analysts have noted CJP has been vague about its roadmap, possibly because it hasn’t settled on one internally yet.

Frequently asked questions

What does CJP stand for?

Cockroach Janta Party. “Janta” means “people’s” in Hindi, so the name translates roughly to “Cockroach People’s Party.”

Who founded CJP and when?

Abhijeet Dipke founded it on May 16, 2026, one day after a Supreme Court remark comparing unemployed youth to cockroaches went viral.

What did CJP achieve?

Its central, achieved demand was the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, announced July 25, 2026, following two months of protest over the NEET UG paper leak and broader exam system accountability.

Is CJP registered with the Election Commission of India?

No. It operates as an unregistered youth pressure movement, not a legal political party.

Why is a cockroach the symbol?

It reclaims an insult. After India’s Chief Justice was reported to have compared unemployed, socially active youth to cockroaches, founder Abhijeet Dipke turned the term into a rallying identity instead of treating it as something to reject.

Is CJP going to become a real political party and contest elections?

Unclear as of late July 2026. CJP’s own leadership has said that decision hasn’t been made and that the movement wants to broaden its focus before deciding.

Was anyone hurt in the CJP protests?

Yes. Delhi Police reported around 180 people injured during the July 20 march on Parliament, including both protesters and security personnel, along with dozens of detentions. Additional incidents were reported in Assam and Bihar.

Conclusion

What is CJP? It is the Cockroach Janta Party — a meme-born youth movement that turned a Supreme Court insult into mass mobilization in mid-2026, then used street pressure over NEET UG failures to help force a cabinet resignation. Whether it stays a pressure group or becomes an electoral party is still an open question.
